mini-interview for you
Hello.
We're working on a new edition of the book "Make a Zine" which some of you may remember from back in 1997.
The chapter on ethics needs a total overhaul since issues have changed and money isn't as much of a corrupting factor as it was back then.
So I have prepared a mini-interview for whoever wants to answer it. Results will be used for quoting and researching the updated chapter.
1) What are your basic ethics in zine making? What are your ultimate goals in zine creation?
2) What do you think are some of the most important ethical dilemmas facing zinesters today?
3) How do you feel these issues manifest themselves in your own zine making? Do you feel like you think about these issues consciously when making or distributing your zines?
4) Do you feel like other people's use of zines
5) Why is it necessary to talk about the ethics of zines?
Please include your name and the name of your zine in your reply.
Thanks!
Joe
Will we see you at the symposium, Mr. Biel???
Hey Joe,
Haven't heard from ya in a while. Anyway, no time to do yr interview right now, but want to. But as far as ethical issues with zines go, I'd have to say, if this falls under it, content, content, content. The rise of the "zinester" and the D.I.Y kids' co-optation of the culture at the cost of the writer/artist who just uses an available medium. The idea of a "zine community" not something more specific like "the bike zine community" or "the polyamoury zine community." If somebody said "the book community" be ludicrous, this ends up dictating content and is offensive. I got more...really gotta go though.

1) ethics: fun. interesting to read and look at. educational. inspiring / motivational. recieve response and feedback and requests for fallow-ups / subscriptions.
2)marketing. cost. interest / offensiveness / originality.
3)Am i making this zine for myself or for others. I am creative first for myself. Sharing this art with others is not so important. why, because art is my journaling. so why would i care to share my private thoughts with strangers? Perhaps only to respond to anothers' trust and vulnerablilty of sharing with me first. Makes for better interacting.
4)I seem to be very particular about zines that I connect with.
5)Zines are the essential for the creative arts to stay alive in the future. they are potentialy the social form and means for networking the home spun artist.
