Copyright law effects every creative person. Join us for a highly informative discussion of the legal issues related to publishing. The primary focus will be on copyright law as it relates to writers, illustrators, photographers, publishers, editors and anyone else involved in 'zine publishing. Topics to be covered include: what are copyrights?, protecting your creative output, using others' creative work, fair use, the public domain, (c)opyright notices, infringement and licensing your creations. Legal experts will be available to answer your questions on copyrights, contracts, libel, free speech, trademarks and other legal issues.
Talk: Writing as Resistance Time: (1 hour)

Explore writing and activism in Portland through this panel comprised of three incredible organizations. Blackthorn Collective will talk about the local radical paper they started this year, someone who is involved with Indymedia will speak to the power of writing out media stories not told anywhere else, and Write Around Portland describes their non-profit work with isolated populations and the power of the written word to change lives.
Workshop: The Harrell Fletcher Method: Starting your own library, magazine, publishing company, etc. etc. all for cheep or funded by someone else.

Artist type person Harrell Fletcher (www.harrellfletcher.com) will show examples of various publications he has produced, from small edition Xerox zines to large scale commercially printed books and catalogs. He will also discuss alternative funding and distributions systems that he has developed and or worked with over the last ten years.
Workshop: Do-It-Yourself Comics: A Brief History and Self-Empowering Demonstration

Concentrates on the "hows" and "whys" of making a DIY comic. Various techniques will be demonstrated, and emphasis will be put on the idea that you, yes YOU, can make your own comic! A brief history of DIY comics from the 1960's to the present will also be included. Shawn Granton has been self-publishing hismini-comic TEN FOOT RULE since 1997 and is responsible for the MODERN INDUSTRY series of anthology comics.

Join Sara Sandberg in a brief discussion on the possibilities of writing. With 10 years of fanzine writing experience (The American Girl, Double Ears, Space Craft Covention, Secret), half a semester of college education, as well as a number of travel adventures, Sara made the leap from photocopied stories to a printed novel (Fairlane). Discussion will focus on: translating fanzine themes into workable plot lines, finding time and a place to write, production, distribution, and patience. Plus a Q & A time.
Workshop: Zine Librarians and the Zine Libraries they Love

We are living in an exciting time for zine libraries. Academic and public libraries across the country have started collections of zines and self-published materials, as well as, scrappy DIYers setting up their own collections in coffeeshops, community spaces and squats. In this workshop / talk, we will discuss the future of zine libraries and explore what it takes to create and run a sustainable zine library.

Workshop: Unschooling

Join unschooling activists and zine publishers to hear about their experiences and opinions concerning education. There will be time for Q+A and plenty of discussion!
Workshop: Creative Ideas for Zines: Never Staple Again: Basic Bookbinding Techniques for Zines
Time: (1 hour) Facilitators: Eleanor Whitney (Indulgence)
This workshop covers two basic binding techniques: the pamphlet stick and Japanese Stab binding. We will also explore different book structures, forms and folds and talk about how they can be incorporated into zines. For those already familiar with these basic bindings, we will explore variations on them. We will construct some basic blank books to practice the bindings. Materials will be provided.
Workshop: Cutthroat screenprinting / Not a Gocco Infomercial.
Time: (1 hour) Facilitator: Michael Bland
Two-part workshop covering the methods and application of both conventional silkscreen methods (stencils and photo-exposed) and the thermal exposure method using the Japanese gocco printer. We will discuss different practical uses of both methods (zine covers, record covers ,t-shirts etc.) and how to cut corners, and how to make your own screens. After a short instruction, people will break into groups and experiment with both methods. A small amount of materials will be provided. People who want to try the gocco printer are asked to bring a 4"x6" high-contrast photocopy of original art work.

Workshop: Creative Ideas for Zines: Blockprinting / Papermaking

CREATIVE BLOCK PRINTING: Focuses on different ways to produce a print from art store bought lino blocks and tools to DIY block printing with recycled materials, erasers or even a potato. These methods can be used for zine covers or creative layout design.
PAPER MAKING DIY STYLE!: Shows basic skills to make paper from recycled materials. We will focus on DIY methods including simple supplies like a blender, tub, a used picture frame and screen door screen to more artistic tips of using plant fibers and more professional screens. This paper is not suited for photocopy but is a great idea for zine covers, stationery, envelopes or any other use you can find for it.

Printing zines, broadsides, cookbooks, and radical propaganda by mimeograph is not just the territory of lucky dumpster divers. Using the AB Dick 411, this workshop gives you some of the technical skills you need to print by mimeo. We will cover stencil preparation techniques and printing operations, focusing on supplies that are still commercially available.
Workshop: Don't Quit Your Day Job--Writing About Your Work for Fun, Profit And Revenge Time: (.75 hour)

Workshop: How to Call Attention To Your Project!

Derek Sivers of CD Baby and Brett Warnock of Top Shelf Comics co-host this panel, discussing techniques to promote your independent project---whether music or printed matter. Top Shelf has been publishing comics since 1995. Focused promotion is what has allowed the company to grow in this time, and finally allowed co-publisher Brett Warnock to quit his day job tending bar. Brett will discuss tips and techniques such as; internet marketing, direct mail, conventioning, signings, and design as a crucial element of promotion.
Workshop: Zines and the Internet

This workshop will cover topics related to the internet in its relevancy to zines, from publishing on the web in the form of an 'e-zine' to promoting a print-only zine using online means. Workshop/Talk: An Investigation of Art Through the Post

This workshop wtill be part talk, part practical. We will look at and discuss past and present forms of mail art, then participants will make some mail art themselves. Recommended prerequisite: viewing of Correspondence Course, the mail art show at Reading Frenzy (921 SW Oak, hours are Monday-Saturday: 11-7, Sundays: Noon-6).
Workshop/Talk: The Mighty Bike (How to take care of it so it will take you places)

A hands-on workshop of bicycle repair, maintenance, and use for cyclists of all skill levels. We'll start with the most basic topics (fixing flat tires, finding and adjusting a bike to fit you) and continue with more advanced subjects, or whatever the participants want to learn about. Bring your bike in any state of disrepair, tools and parts if you have them, or nothing at all.
Workshop: We Do This Stuff and Would Like To Share It With You

An informal discussion about being resourceful when it comes to putting together movie or art shows for your friends and the friends you haven't met yet. Highlights include a slideshow about "meeting people" (an art project that brought together contributions from nearly 500 people). A step-by-step guide to publicity and press relations, and some pointers about how to get venues for free or close to it.
